African history at the Tower of London

Harry Cumberbatch MBE pioneered an innovative project that used black history to empower African/Caribbean people with mental health issues. This event is organised by Black History Walks in conjunction with the Sarah Parker Remond Centre at U.C.L.

Harry Cumberbatch MBE pioneered an innovative project that used black history to empower African/Caribbean people with mental health issues. Two books, including ‘African history at the Tower of London’ (2008) were published by THACMHO (Tower Hamlets Mental Health Organisations Health Through History project) They also published Power Writers (2003) a collection of essays about five African activists including Phyllis Wheatley and Oluadah Equiano, who lived in East London in the 1700s and used words to fight for freedom.

Both books were researched and compiled by black people with mental health challenges and they also delivered walking tours and exhibitions on Black History. Service Users improved their self esteem and developed a strong sense of identity while participating.

This, interactive session will feature conversational memories with Mr Cumberbatch and Tony Warner, author of ‘Black History Walks in London Volume 1’, with videos, music and photographs, plus questions and answers. We will cover:

  • African history in the Tower of London 1500’s to 2010
  • Black power writers of the 18th century
  • London, Sugar and Slavery exhibition (Museum of Docklands) and THACMHO role in its curation
  • From Merchant Navy sailor, to bus driver, to first black youth worker in Newham
  • Black British Civil Rights: 1960s to 2000s Race Relations Acts, the fight for equality
  • How history can repair mental health

Black History Walks and Twentyin2020

Tony Warner is the author of ‘Black History Walks in London Volume 1’. This is part of Black publishing house, Jacaranda Books revolutionary Twenty in 2020 initiative to publish 20 books by 20 Black British authors in 2020. An unprecedented feat. ‘Black History Walks in London Volume 1’ is the 20th of that series but was delayed to this year due to the Coronavirus.

It was a wonderful experience and I would recommend it for all

A brisk, informative stroll through the heart of the British Empire. Our cheerful and intellectually generous tour guide, led us through narrow alleyways and past Roman ruins, within halls constructed by powerful guilds; in the process, he revealed to us both the many layers of British history and the often unacknowledged cultural multiplicity at its core. The tour was exciting, informative and allowed everyone across age, interest, and temperament to participate and learn. It was a wonderful experience and I would recommend it for all.

I cannot recommend BHW highly enough for a school visit
